Some apples catch your attention with their color. Others win you over with their taste. Richared Apples have a reputation for both.
Our Organic Richared Apples (also known as Rich-a-Red Delicious) come from the same certified-organic farmer in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, who brings us our much-loved Royal Delicious Apples.
Grown at approximately 9,550 feet (2,911 meters) in the high Himalayas, these apples belong to the celebrated Delicious family, with their own distinctive character: rich red skin, firm and juicy flesh, pronounced sweetness and relatively gentle acidity.
And unlike apples selected merely for their flawless, polished appearance, ours are grown without synthetic pesticide sprays, artificial waxing or chemical ripening treatments.
What makes them particularly special, though, is the farmer behind them, a schoolteacher whose approach to farming is as thoughtful as it is deeply rooted in his Himalayan surroundings.
High in the Himalayan mountains of Kinnaur lies the village where our farmer grows his apples.
At approximately 9,550 feet above sea level, this is a landscape of steep mountains, cold winters, abundant sunshine during the growing season and very little rainfall.
The village has a fascinating cultural history. According to local tradition, it was visited and blessed by Padmasambhava Ji, also revered as Guru Rinpoche or the Second Buddha.
With exceptionally low rainfall, irrigation is a precious resource. The village's orchards depend on two streams originating in the Himalayas, providing the water needed to sustain fruit cultivation in this demanding environment.
These are not easy conditions in which to farm.
Yet they have supported generations of mountain communities and have made Kinnaur one of India's recognized apple-growing regions.
Apple development is influenced by temperature, sunlight, altitude, growing-season conditions and the genetics of the variety.
The cool climate and distinctive day-night temperature patterns of high Himalayan orchards can influence fruit color development, firmness, acidity, sweetness and aroma.
The combination of the Richared cultivar and its growing environment gives these apples their characteristic eating quality.
For us, it is the interaction of the variety, the mountain environment and the farmer's practices that makes the fruit worth seeking out.
Our Kinnaur farmer is not a conventional commercial fruit trader.
He is a school teacher with a PhD in Education, who also manages his family's Himalayan orchard with considerable personal involvement.
His approach combines certified-organic cultivation, biodynamic practices and traditional Indian agricultural knowledge.
One of the most interesting aspects of his farming is that more than 90% of the inputs used on the farm are prepared by him locally.
These preparations form part of his approach to soil care, orchard management and crop protection, reducing dependence on purchased agricultural formulations.
The orchard follows certified-organic practices and incorporates biodynamic principles.
Different activities, including crop-care interventions, are planned with reference to traditional agricultural calendars and natural cycles.
Preparations such as cold-pressed neem oil are used where appropriate as part of the orchard's pest-management programme.
In a region where rainfall is exceptionally scarce, water cannot be taken for granted.
Our farmer's orchards are sustained by irrigation from Himalayan streams, making thoughtful water use an essential part of farming.
This is the same farmer who grows our Organic Royal Delicious Apples. Only the apple variety changes; the farmer, orchard provenance and commitment to organic cultivation remain the same.
Richared Delicious is a recognized red-colored natural mutation, or bud sport, of the original Delicious apple.
The cultivar was discovered in Washington State, USA, around 1915 and introduced commercially in the 1920s.
It became known for its stronger red coloring while retaining the classic eating characteristics of the Delicious family.
The UK's National Fruit Collection describes Richared as an apple with very firm, very sweet, juicy flesh and an aromatic flavor.
Richared was selected historically for its enhanced red skin color. Depending on orchard conditions and maturity, its surface may develop a broad, attractive crimson-red blush.
The precise shade and coverage vary naturally from fruit to fruit.
One of Richared's most interesting characteristics is its relatively low acidity.
This gives it a distinctly sweet eating profile without requiring unusually high sugar concentrations.
Richared is traditionally recognized for firm flesh and a pleasing bite, particularly when eaten at an appropriate maturity and stored correctly.
Beneath the red skin is light-colored, juicy flesh with the familiar aroma of a Delicious-family apple.
The combination makes Richared especially well suited to eating fresh.
Both varieties come from the same Kinnaur farmer and certified-organic orchard, and both belong to the Delicious family.
Their differences are subtle but worth understanding.
| Characteristic | Richared Delicious | Royal Delicious |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Rich red to deep crimson, often with broad red coverage | Deep red, with variable blush and striping |
| Sweetness | Pronounced sweet taste, aided by relatively low acidity | Naturally sweet, with a slightly more noticeable acidity in comparative research |
| Tartness | Generally very gentle | Mild, potentially more noticeable than Richared |
| Crunch | Firm, satisfying bite | Firm, crisp bite |
| Juiciness | Juicy | Juicy |
| Aroma | Pleasant Delicious-family aroma | Mild, familiar Delicious-family aroma |
| Fruit size | May be comparatively larger, depending on orchard and crop | Size varies by crop and grading |
| Keeping quality | Good refrigeration is important; no proven storage advantage over Royal Delicious | Good refrigeration is important; no proven storage advantage over Richared |
| Best suited for | Those who prefer a sweeter-tasting, lower-acidity apple | Those who enjoy classic Royal Delicious sweetness with a little more balance |
A comparative study conducted in the Himalayan region of Mustang, Nepal, in 2023, and published in the International Journal of Horticulture in 2024, examined both Richared and Royal Delicious apples.
The researchers found that the two varieties had nearly identical soluble-solids readings, but Richared had significantly lower titratable acidity and a higher sweetness-to-acidity ratio.
That helps explain why Richared can taste sweeter without necessarily containing more sugar.
The research also found larger average fruit size in Richared under those particular experimental conditions.
These findings help explain the cultivars, although the precise characteristics of each harvest will depend on its own maturity and growing conditions.
Choose Richared if you prefer a red apple with pronounced natural sweetness, gentle acidity and a firm, juicy bite.
Choose Royal Delicious if you enjoy the familiar taste of Kinnaur's classic Royal Delicious, with natural sweetness and a little more perceptible acidity.
Neither is inherently better. The more interesting choice is the one that suits your palate.

Approximate generic apple values based on USDA nutritional data. These are not laboratory measurements of our Richared harvest.
Whole apples contain soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, including pectin.
Dietary fiber supports normal digestive function and contributes to the nutritional value of a balanced diet.
Apples contain several classes of plant polyphenols, including flavanols, phenolic acids and, in red-skinned varieties, anthocyanin pigments.
Their concentrations vary according to cultivar, growing conditions, maturity and storage.
These compounds are scientifically interesting, but their presence should not be interpreted as proof that eating a particular apple prevents or treats disease.
With approximately 85% water content, apples are an easy way to add whole fruit to your everyday eating routine.
Apple peel contributes fiber and contains many of the fruit's naturally occurring phenolic compounds.
Because our apples are not coated with added commercial wax, we encourage customers to wash them thoroughly and enjoy them with their peel, if they prefer.
A note for people managing blood glucose: Richared's relatively low acidity can make it taste sweeter, but this does not establish that it contains more sugar than Royal Delicious. Whole apples still contain carbohydrates and natural sugars, so portion size should be considered.
Richared is primarily a fresh-eating or dessert apple, and that is how we recommend enjoying it.
For the best eating experience, serve the apples cool but not necessarily ice-cold, allowing their natural aroma to become more noticeable.
One advantage of apples is that they can retain good eating quality under appropriate refrigeration.
However, storage life depends on maturity at harvest, fruit condition, handling and temperature, not simply on the variety's reputation.
For best results:
Freshly harvested, sound apples may keep for several weeks and sometimes 1-2 months under suitable refrigeration, but this should not be treated as a guaranteed shelf life for every batch.
Kinnaur apples are harvested seasonally, generally towards autumn.
Our farmer uses cold storage without chemical fumigation or post-harvest chemical treatments to preserve the fruit beyond its harvest season.
When offered later in the year, these are therefore cold-stored apples, not fruit freshly picked from the tree.
At Sanesa, we believe that distinction is worth making.
Richared's history goes back more than a century.
Around 1915, J. L. Richardson discovered a naturally occurring, more intensely colored mutation of the Delicious apple in Washington State, USA.
Rather than resulting from the deliberate crossbreeding of two different apple varieties, Richared emerged as a bud sport, a spontaneous genetic change occurring in a part of an existing apple tree.
That chance discovery eventually became an established cultivar.
Today, more than a century later, descendants of that variety continue to be grown in orchards far from their American origins, including the high Himalayan fruit-growing regions of India.

1. What is a Richared Apple?
Richared, also known as Richared Delicious or Rich-a-Red, is a naturally occurring color mutation of the original Delicious apple. It is known for rich red coloring, sweet flavor, relatively low acidity and firm, juicy flesh.
2. What is the difference between Richared and Royal Delicious Apples?
Both are Delicious-family apples. Richared can have a sweeter perceived taste because of lower acidity, while Royal Delicious offers the familiar sweet flavor of classic Kinnaur apples with slightly more acidity in comparative research. Both are firm and juicy; actual crunch depends on maturity and storage.
3. Are Richared Apples sweeter than Royal Delicious?
They can taste sweeter, although that does not necessarily mean they contain more sugar. Comparative research has found similar soluble-solids concentrations but lower acidity in Richared.
4. Are these apples sourced from the same farmer as Royal Delicious?
Yes. Both varieties come from our certified-organic farmer in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, whose orchard is situated at approximately 9,550 feet.
5. Are Sanesa's Richared Apples certified organic?
Yes. They are sourced from a certified-organic orchard that also incorporates biodynamic and traditional Indian farming practices.
6. Are these apples coated with wax?
No added commercial wax coating is applied. Apples naturally produce a protective waxy cuticle, which should not be confused with artificial waxing.
7. How long can Richared Apples remain fresh in the refrigerator?
Storage life depends on their condition and how recently they were harvested. Freshly harvested, sound apples can sometimes retain good quality for several weeks or 1-2 months under suitable refrigeration, although individual results vary.
8. Can people with diabetes eat Richared Apples?
Whole apples can fit into many diabetes meal plans. However, they contain natural sugars and carbohydrates, and portion sizes should be considered according to individual dietary requirements.
9. Are Richared Apples good for children?
Yes. Washed, appropriately cut pieces of whole apple can make a convenient fruit snack. For young children, prepare pieces in a form that reduces choking risk.
10. Do you offer same-day delivery of Richared Apples?
Yes, subject to product availability and serviceable locations. Same-day delivery is available for orders placed before 4 PM in Gurugram and before 2 PM in Delhi, Noida, Faridabad and Indirapuram.
